FAQ - About this site

Why is this site called "Television's Other 10%"?

My friend Julia came up with the name. There's a quote by Theodore Sturgeon which says, "90% of everything is crap." Get it? Huh? Get it? Oh, never mind.

Who created this site and why?

This site was first created in 1999 by Suzanne Schaller (me) as a quotation collection for Blake's Seven. I gradually added more shows as time went on. I began writing quotes down because I have a terrible memory and I have to have a pen and paper handy, and then I got the idea of putting my quote collections online.

I also have a quite-wacky sense of humour. If you're wondering who the heck I am, or think I might be in your class or something, feel free to visit my home page or go to my about me page. To send me email, send it to knowledgelady@yahoo.com.

Where do you get all these quotes?

Most of the quotes I get by actually watching the show and writing stuff down. I write down things that make me laugh, or more serious/thoughtful quotes that make me say "Hmm."

In some cases, I have used online transcripts of episodes, because it makes things much quicker. For Frasier, I have used The Frasier Files. For Buffy, I have used the transcripts of AleXander and other people, now archived at this site. Simpsons episode capsules on www.snpp.com have also been very useful. Black Adder transcripts are also online. I gathered some Star Trek quotes from other online collections as well as taking them from episodes, and I tried not to take too many from any one site.

Where did the sound files come from? Can I download them?

I created most of the sounds myself, except for Buffy and Star Trek. If you want to download them, go nuts - I don't mind. However, if you put them on your site I'd appreciate credit.

How can I find a particular quote if I know the TV show?

Some of the shows have quotations organized by episode, others by character, and others by season. I just used whatever format seemed to work best for each show. So if you know the show, just read through the pages, you might find it. Or you can use the search feature to find a word or a phrase.

Can you help me find a particular quote if I have no idea where it's from?? Help!!

If you don't find it on this site, then my advice is to go to Google or Altavista and enter the phrase in quotation marks. There's gotta be someone who has quoted it online.

Where do you get the episode titles that don't appear on-screen?

I get them from online episode guides. Have a look through my links or do a search for episode guides.

Can you send me a tape of an episode? Do you know where I can get a tape?

No, I'm sorry, I don't mail out tapes of episodes. Try posting on one of the mailing lists for that show.

How often is this site updated?

Whenever I get time. I'm a full-time graduate student so I tend to go in spurts whenever I get some free time. I try to remember to add to the Updates page when I do get new stuff up.

Will you be adding new shows?

Maybe, if I find more than I think are worthwhile, but I don't really have time to do much more than update the ones that I already have. If there's a show that you like and it's not on my site, you could create your own website with quotes from that show. (Which is my way of saying "this is a lot of work, why don't you try it?")

The only show that I have currently in progess is That 70s Show (yeah!), but I don't know when it'll be ready - my VCR broke (overuse?), so now it's stalled.

Which reminds me. How come you're so far behind on some shows?

  1. My VCR broke and I haven't replaced it yet.
  2. I have a life and I don't get paid for transcribing quotes from TV shows.
  3. If anyone wants to pay me to do this, let me know! :-)

Can I take quotes from your site and put them on mine?

I don't own these quotes, and I didn't write them, so I can't stop you. However, I've put a lot of work into gathering these quotes together, and so if you're going to take some quotes I'd appreciate it if you just take a few, not everything. If you like the site, why not just link to it?

Come on, Sue, don't you have anything better to do than watch TV and write down quotations?

It's a dirty job, but someone's gotta do it.
