The Way Back
Blake: Since you were so insistent, I've done without food and drink for thirty-six hours.
Ravella: How do you feel?
Blake: Hungry and thirsty.
Blake is urged by Ravella to try the "natural water" of the stream, and he spits it out in disgust. Ravella explains that the water inside is recycled as well as dosed with suppressants.
Blake: It improves the flavour, if nothing else.
Blake: I've had no "treatments"!!
Vila: Take it easy - I hate personal violence, especially when I'm the person!
Vila on Cygnus Alpha: It must have a bright side. None of the guests have ever left early; in fact, none of them have ever left at all.
Vila: Murderers, liars, cheats... smugglers -
Jenna: Thieves...
Vila: And they're the nice people.
Vila on himself: I steal things. Compulsive, I'm afraid. I've had my head adjusted by some of the best in the business, but it just won't stay adjusted.
Vila: We're all victims of a miscarriage of justice.
Vila: Friends in high places? Can you put in a word for me?
Blake: I'll try to think of one.
|
Space Fall
Commander: Still studying for your commander's credentials?
Artix: Yes, sir. I don't want to spend the rest of my life on old tubs like... Sorry sir.
Vila: Do you think this would be a good time to tell them I suffer from flight sickness?
Jenna: I expect they'd find a cure for it - a permanent one.
Vila: They amputate your head.
Jenna has her little "conversation" with Raiker as to what special facilities she should receive.
Vila: Why couldn't you be nice to him?
Jenna: He's not my type.
Vila: You can't afford to be choosy.
Jenna: Why else would I be talking to you?
Vila: Kerr Avon - when it comes to computers, he's the number two man in all the federated worlds.
Nova: Who's number one?
Vila: The guy who caught him. ... He came close to stealing five million credits out of the Federation Banking System.
Blake: What went wrong?
Avon: I relied on other people. Why all the questions, or is it simply a thirst for knowledge?
Vila: Nervous? I'm not nervous, just... poised for action.
Avon: Give me one good reason why I should help you.
Blake: You're a civilized man, Avon. On Cygnus Alpha, that will not be a survival characteristic.
Avon, indicating Vila: We're an army of five, Blake - five, and him.
Vila: I'd go, except I've got this problem with confined spaces. There's a medical name for it.
Jenna: Cowardice?
Gan continues to smile charmingly while bullying the guard into opening the door.
Gan: Stay right there, or we'll kill them. Drop your guns.
Vila drops his gun. The guards promptly start shooting with their own.
Gan: Vila....
Vila: I got confused.
Avon: I thought you were probably insane.
Blake: That's possible. They butchered my family and friends. They murdered my past and gave me tranquillized dreams.
Jenna: At least you're still alive.
Blake: No - not until free men can think and speak! Not until power is back with the honest man.
Avon: Have you ever met an honest man?
Jenna (quietly): I have.
Avon: Wake up, Blake. You may not be tranquillized any longer, but you're still dreaming.
Jenna: Maybe some dreams are worth having.
Raiker: You could have won, Blake. All you needed was guts.
Blake (quietly raging) I'll settle for yours.
Blake, Avon and Jenna are recaptured.
Blake: It was my fault.
Avon: We know.
Blake (humouring him) I'll try to do better next time.
Avon: We had one chance and you wasted it. There won't be a "next time."
Jenna: In which case you can die content... knowing that you were right.
Avon: Execution may have some appeal after all.
Blake: We have less to lose.
Avon: You may have, but I value my life.
|
Cygnus Alpha
Jenna: There are a lot of controls I don't dare touch.
Blake: Well, I doubt if we'd understand the manual, so go ahead and try them.
Jenna: Well don't blame me if it self-destructs.
Blake: I doubt we'll ever speak to you again.
Blake and Avon discover the gun storage area.
Blake: A handgun?
Avon: It's a bit elaborate for a toothpick.
Blake: That depends on how elaborate their teeth were.
Avon: Single function isomorphic response.
Jenna: What??
Blake: I think he means it'll only let us have one gun each.
Avon: Well it certainly gives one a feeling of independence.
Blake: What does?
Avon: This!
(Avon has his gun trained on Blake and Jenna. They ignore him. Avon's body language says "oh well, it was worth a try!" and he tosses the gun onto the couch.)
Avon: A computer can't have a will of its own.
Jenna: You'd better tell Zen that.
Zen: Wisdom must be gathered; it cannot be given.
Avon: Don't philosophize with me, you electronic moron.
Vila: What a miserable hole. Do you think if we complain they'll give us our money back?
Another prisoner: Shut up.
Vila on the lack of guards: It's a long walk back.
Blake's description of teleportation: It's something like your property when Vila's around. Suddenly it's somewhere else.
Vila: The architectural style is early maniac.
Vila: I like God's taste in servants!!
Another prisoner: Shut up.
Avon to Blake: Do you really think we'd leave you down there?
Jenna, to Avon rather than to Blake: No, we wouldn't.
Jenna: Are you trying to get rid of me?
Avon: I have to get rid of Blake first. You're next on my list.
Jenna: That would be very disarming if I didn't know if you meant it.
Jenna enters in her new clothes.
Avon: I'm glad to see you haven't been wasting your time on frivolities.
Vargas: I am directly descended by the true and chosen line. Mine is the power by right.
Blake: This planet was uninhabited until the Federation brought the first criminals here fifty years ago. Is that the noble line from which you stem?
Avon: He's [Blake] a crusader. He'll look upon all this as just one more weapon to use against the Federation. And you know he can't win. What do you want to be, rich or dead?
Avon: They'll keep coming - pushing us, tracking us - they'll never give up.
Blake: Nor will we. When we can handle this ship properly, we'll stop running. Then we'll fight.
|
Time Squad
Jenna: Together, we can fly this ship manually.
Gan: I think we make a good team.
Avon: Well hooray for us.
Vila: What's eating you?
Avon: I'm just wondering how long we're going to live to enjoy our new-found skills.
Vila: Out-run them? In this we can out-stroll them!
Vila to Blake: I don't follow you.
Avon: Oh but you do! And that's the problem!!
Blake: Just tell me when you want to leave.
Avon: Oh, I will.
Vila: .... I feel for them, but we've got problems of our own!
Vila: Gan, if you're trying to scare me, you're succeeding!
Blake and Jenna materialize in a very cramped place.
Blake: Thank you, Avon!
Blake: I'm breathless with anticipation!
Vila: You know, with hands like that and a delicate upbringing, he [Avon] might have made a respectable pickpocket.
Blake: Vila, I shall want you down there with me.
Vila: (less than thrilled) Oh. Right.
Blake: Bring your bag of tricks.
Blake: You have to be careful of the plant life around here. Some of it's carnivorous! (Avon pulls back his hand) Some of it even has an intelligence rating.
Vila: Well that's a comfort. I should hate to be eaten by something stupid.
Vila answering the question "Have you found anything?": Several plants with designs on my body. Apart from that, there's nothing else in sight.
Cally: May you die alone and silent!
Blake: You can talk then.
Vila: I plan to live forever - or die trying.
Blake: Avon, can you do it?
Avon: Five minutes. I know - make it two.
Blake: Seven of us can run this ship properly.
Vila: Six, surely.
Blake: You forgot Zen.
Avon: You're not counting that machine as a member of the crew!
Blake: What do you say to that, Zen?
Zen: Please state course and speed.
Blake: Very diplomatic.
|
The Web
Zen refuses to answer Blake's question.
Blake: If the ship blows up, lofty disinterest won't save you.
Avon: All knowledge is valuable.
Cally: I'm interested in your work.
Avon looks like he's wondering if it's his work that Cally is interested in, or something else of his.
Blake tries to defuse a bomb.
Avon: Be careful. If the light goes out, you've got about three seconds.
The light goes out. Blake just stands there and stares at Avon, who flies across the room and throws Blake to the floor. Explosion.
Blake: Thank you. Why?
Avon: Automatic reaction. I'm as surprised as you are.
Blake: I'm not surprised.
Blake: Vila, go and see how Cally is.
Vila: Must I?
Jenna: It's not catching.
Vila: It brought my head out in lumps.
Avon: We could make a fortune with it [the Liberator] if it wasn't for Blake.
Gan: In what way?
Avon: There's always a market for technology like this.
Gan: I don't think Blake will agree to that.
Avon: There will come a time when Blake will not be making the decisions.
Vila: About spiders' webs....
Blake: What about them?
Vila: They're used for trapping food.
Blake: Whatever's down there can control you. It's already demonstrated that.
Cally: But I was unprepared!
Avon: So were we.
Avon: What if something happens to you and we can't get you back?
Blake: Then all you've got to do is get everybody out of this mess. Avon smiles.
Cally: The Lost have great powers.
Vila: Why would they need new cells then?
Cally reacts to the appearance of the pursuit ships a good five seconds after everyone sees them. Unfortunately, her line is, "There they are."
Blake: They need power. They can't survive without it.
Avon: Neither can we.
Blake: I'll bear that in mind.
Avon: Don't worry. I'll remind you.
Avon: These are what you wanted to protect? [The Decima]
Blake: They're fighting for their lives.
Avon: Who isn't?
|
Seek-Locate-Destroy
Blake: I'm down and safe. Is Vila ready?
Jenna: Are you ready?
Vila: Tell him I've just worked out a completely new strategy. It's called "running away."
Jenna: He's ready.
Vila: There isn't a lock I can't open if I'm scared enough.
Vila distracting the guards: Excuse me wondering about your premises. I'm an escaped prisoner. I was a thief, but recently, I've become interested in sabotage, in a small way, you understand - nothing too ambitious. I hate vulgarity, don't you? Anyway, I've come to blow something up. What do you think would be most
suitable?
Avon: That's the trouble with heroics: they seldom run on schedule.
Jenna: Avon's right.
Avon: I usually am.
Avon says Jenna's co-ordinates need to be accurate...
Avon: ...or you'll put us down right in the security barracks.
Jenna: Don't tempt me.
Bercol: Blake is becoming a legend. His name is a rallying call for malcontents of all ages. He must be stopped.
Secretary: He [Travis] has been ... umm... over-zealous?
Servalan: Don't be afraid of the word: ruthless, committed. He does his duty as he sees it, and he sees it clearly. He has no time for the dirty grey areas of your politics.
Avon: Do you remember enough to recognize Travis again?
Blake: A man who killed twenty of my friends? Oh yes, I'll recognize him.
Blake: You don't matter enough to kill, Travis.
Jenna: You've got to make peace with yourself if you want to survive.
Jenna: Are we going to attack it?
Blake: One for Cally. Because I want to survive.
Travis: I'm always grateful for a "rough analogy."
|
Mission to Destiny
Vila: I don't like this.
Jenna: That's unusual.
Vila: Mock if you like, but I can always sense danger.
Gan: Even when there isn't any.
Avon: It is frequently easier to be honest when you have nothing to lose.
Cally: Remember that Avon and I will be staying. We will regard ourselves as hostages against Blake's return.
Avon: Why thank you Cally, what a clever idea!!
Cally: Blake will return.
Avon: You can bet your life on it. In fact, you've just bet both our lives on it.
Blake: You don't mind staying, do you?
Cally: We must help these people.
Avon: Must we? Personally, I don't care if the whole planet turns into a mushroom.
Cally: My people have a saying: A man who trusts can never be betrayed, only mistaken.
Avon: Life expectancy must be very short among your people.
Vila: Intensity 27 is a lot of very fast rocks.
Captain: Someone among us is determined that this mission should fail, and frankly, I can't even guess at a motive.
Avon: Try greed. It's usually reliable. You were carrying something extremely valuable... It would make a man wealthy beyond imagining. Well, it obviously wasn't beyond the imagination of someone here.
Zen: Insufficient data for accurate projection.
Jenna: In other words, he doesn't know.
Zen: Confirmed.
Blake: Have the detectors located the outer edge of the storm yet?
Vila: No. Yes! No. Maybe.
Blake: Which is it??
Vila: It's maybe.
Cally, sitting in front of the board with "54124" on it: The answer is here, if only we could see it!
Grovane: I saw him [Sonheim] with a dagger in his hand.
Avon: But you didn't see him use it.
Grovane: I didn't see Mandrian die either, but I know he's dead!
Avon claims to know what "54124" means.
Pasco: What's it mean?
Avon: Absolutely nothing.
Avon: You don't just get off a spaceship and run.
Sara: I'll kill the first one who puts his head outside this door.
(Avon sticks his head out, and isn't shot)
Avon: Well, she's one of your crew. You'd better get after her!
Avon (after beating up Sara): You'd better get her out of here. I really rather enjoyed that.

Duel
Blake comments that he may have offended Zen.
Avon: It's just a machine, Blake.
Vila (aside): And he should know.
Gan: Well, he is the expert.
Vila: That's not what I meant.
Avon: No. He was calling me a machine. And since he undoubtedly defines himself as a human being, I shall accept that as a compliment.
(Blake ignores all this and asks who wants to go down to the planet.)
Jenna: I'd be glad to get clear of this lot for a while!
Gan (who is between Avon and Vila): I could do with a change of air!
Blake: Vila, try and stay alert.
Vila: Of course I will. How can you doubt me?
Blake: It isn't easy, but somehow I manage it.
Avon: Logic says we're dead!!
Blake: Logic has never explained what "dead" means!
Blake: Hang on, everyone, this is going to be rough.
Vila: I don't mind rough. It's fatal I'm not too keen on.
Blake: Have you got any better ideas?
Avon: As a matter of fact, I haven't.
Blake: Does that mean you agree?
Avon: Do I have a choice?
Blake: Yes.
Avon: Then I agree.
Blake: I don't want to kill for your entertainment.
The Keeper: Half the lesson is the death of an enemy. The other half is the death of a friend.
Blake: I've seen friends die.
Travis: Nothing concerns me but my duty. I don't give a damn about their lessons. I shall enjoy taking your life, Blake.
Blake: He must have set our host a bit of a problem. How do you demonstrate the death of a friend to a man who hasn't got any?
Vila: Have you thought of another plan?
Avon: Yes, I'm going to get some sleep.
Vila: How can you sleep with all this happening?
Avon: With all what happening? Blake is sitting up in a tree. Travis is sitting up in another tree. Unless they're planning to throw nuts at one another, I don't see much of a fight developing before it gets light.
Gan: You're never involved are you Avon? Have you ever cared for anyone?
Vila: Except yourself?
Avon: I've never understood why it should be necessary to become irrational in order to prove that you care, or indeed why it should be necessary to prove it at all.
Vila: Was that an insult, or did I miss something?
Cally: You missed something.
Blake: Besides, as long he's [Travis] alive, he'll be the one chasing me. And I know I can beat him. ... Another reason I didn't kill Travis - I would have enjoyed it.
Travis: [Blake] made one fatal error. He should have killed me.

Project Avalon
Avon, speaking about the planet: We've come at the worst time of course - the northern hemisphere is just entering its winter cycle. They call it the Long Cold. It's something of an understatement. It lasts the equivalent of 8 ½ Earth years.
Blake: Does it support any intelligent life?
Avon: Does the Liberator?
(Blake gives Jenna a look and decides to let it pass.)
Avon on Avalon: Another idealist, poor but honest. I shall look forward to our meeting with anticipation.
Vila, on being told to transport down: Me??! Now wait a minute, it's cold out there. I'm very susceptible to low temperatures. I've got a weak chest.
Avon: The rest of you's not very impressive.
Vila: I'm tired of being indispensable.
Servalan on Blake: Stories of his exploits are still circulating. They excite people. The fact that he is still free gives them hope, and that is dangerous, Travis. Hope is very dangerous.
Travis: The loss of it can be fatal, and the source of it all is about to be wiped out.
Vila: You'd need a lot of explosives, or a genius, to open it.
Blake: Can you do it?
Vila: Of course.
Blake: All right, we'll applaud you later. Just get on with it.
Guard, to Blake: May I have your name and authority?
Vila, sticking his gun in the guard's chest: His name is Blake, and this is his authority.
Avon: What went wrong??
Blake: I was about to ask you that!
|
Breakdown
Vila: Oh my head. What fell on me?
Avon: (indicating Gan) He did.
Vila: I'm glad he's a friend. It could get very painful if he really didn't like you.
Avon: There's a price on our heads. We are all under sentence of death.
Jenna: The difference is that Gan's sentence is being carried out right now.
Jenna: They don't like humanoids in general and in particular Homo Sapiens.
Avon: That puts their intelligence beyond doubt.
Jenna: Maybe Zen's got it wrong.
Avon: Zen hasn't got it at all.
Jenna: Or, whoever programmed him.
Avon: One of these days I intend to find out who that is.
Vila: Why should I find "nothing" terrifying?
Avon: Blake, in the unlikely event that we survive, I'm finished. Staying with you requires a degree of stupidity of which I no longer feel capable.
Blake: Now you're just being modest.
Renor: This place is full of pretty girls!!
Blake: Is there any way we can thank you?
Professor: You could try getting caught.
Gan: They didn't remove the limiter.
Jenna: It was impossible.
Vila: They've modified it though. Your ears glow in the dark now.
|
Bounty
Vila: I'm entitled to my opinion. Avon: It is your assumption that we are entitled to it as well that is irritating. Vila: He [Avon] agrees with me! It makes it all seem worthwhile! Vila asks Zen what's happening in the teleport room.
Zen: Insufficient data. It will be necessary for you to make a personal investigation. Vila: Personal investigation. The next time Avon wants to make a personal investigation on how you work, I shall make a personal point of handing him the instruments personally! Vila tries to pick the lock on Blake's neck-restraint-thing: If I get it wrong, then bang! no head! Blake: I trust you.
Vila: But if it blows up and I'm right behind you... Blake: That's why I trust you. Tyse: You'd sell your grandmother, wouldn't you? Tarvin: I did. She was going to sell me. I got in first. Cally: What do you take pride in, Jenna?
Jenna: Survival. Avon: At the expense of your friends? Jenna: I didn't know you cared, Avon. Vila: He didn't. And he was right. Vila: I wouldn't have thought it of Jenna. Blake: I'm still not sure I believe it.
Avon: What does she have to do to convince you, Blake - personally blow your head off? And the final parting line: Blake: Well, don't just stand there!
|
Deliverance
Blake: Are you sure you want to go down? Avon: Are you afraid that I'll be able to cope with it better than you? Blake (laughing): No. Avon: Well, perhaps you ought to be. After realizing that Jenna was left behind on the planet:
Avon: We'll go back down. Blake (very quietly): I think you'd better.
Cally, flattened against the floor at gunpoint by Ensor: Are we to stay like this for the whole trip? (It's a very cute shot.) Travis: If you think my silence is weakness, you mistake me. Servalan: You really are obsessed with Blake, aren't you. Travis: It's my right. Servalan: I agreed to buy it [Orac].
Travis: Do you have the authority? Servalan: No. Travis: You're almost as ruthless as I am. Servalan: You underestimate me, Travis. Travis: It begins to look that way. Meegat kneels at Avon's feet and calls him "my lord."
Gan: Well, she seems to be on our side. Vila: Yes, but the poor woman's insane!! Meegat: I will describe the way to the scavengers' camp so that you may rescue your follower [Jenna]. Avon: My follower? I never really thought of her in those terms. Meegat: I've offended you. Avon: No, you haven't offended me.
Meegat: Forgive me. Avon (Looking bored out of his mind): I forgive you.
Vila: You're enjoying this, aren't you. Avon: Probably. Vila: Counting yourself, that makes two people that think you're wonderful. Vila on Meegat: She's been alone too long - definitely. Avon: It does seem that we have a reputation to live up to. Vila: You certainly do, Lord Avon. I wonder why she picked on you?
Avon: You are hardly the stuff that gods are made of. Vila: And you are? Avon: Apparently. Vila tells Avon that the scavengers had "no respect. They obviously didn't realize who you were." Blake: We'll be in teleport range in about four hours. Jenna: We'll be waiting. In the meantime, Avon's about to become a legend. Out. Blake: What? Avon: Meegat, I'm sorry you waited so long.
Meegat: Our waiting brought you. Avon: That seems like a poor reward somehow.
Blake: How did it feel [to be a god]? Avon: Don't you know? Blake: Yes. I don't like the responsibility either.

Orac
Vila: They will be on their way to pick up Orac as fast as they can go, and that's very fast. Blake: Not as fast as us. Avon: Ever the optimist.
Vila: DIE??! I can't do that!! Avon: I'm afraid you can. It's the one talent we all share, even you. Zen: Preliminary research indicates that all computer functions were temporarily on external control. Jenna: But that's impossible. Zen: Logic units concur that it is impossible. Blake: But it happened anyway. Zen: Logic units concur that it happened. Investigation of this paradox is continuing. Robot: You will stand up. (Blake and Cally look around in surprise, but remain seated.) You will stand up! You are carrying weapons. You will remove them. Blake: No. (Robot blasts the ground in front of them.) We will remove them. Robot: You will make greatest speed, hurry hurry!! (Great tone of voice for a robot!) Gan: He [Vila] is doing his best to convince himself that he feels fine. He says that we'll
just remind him that he doesn't. Avon: Sometimes he shows distinct signs of intelligence. Ensor: Press the red button. (Blake does.) The red one! (Blake presses the green one with a smile.) Blake: Weapons? Ensor: I disapprove of weapons. Blake: So do I, but I disapprove of dying even more. Travis: What do you think I'm going to do? Blake: I think you're going to kill me, Travis - with or without orders from the Supreme Commander. Servalan: With orders, Blake. All right Travis, go ahead. (Travis raises his gun to shoot Blake, but just then he is shot in the arm.) Avon: Don't move. Blake: Good shot, Avon.
Avon: I was aiming for his head. Travis: What are you waiting for? C'mon man, why don't you kill us? Blake: No. I've got a better idea. We'll get a message through to the Federation. We'll tell them that you let us take Orac. I'm sure that they'll be quite fascinated by your explanation. (They transport up with Orac.) Servalan: You're in a lot of trouble, Travis. Everyone sits around Orac, Avon turns it on and they all stare at it. Orac just buzzes. Jenna: Well, for a hundred million credits, you'd expect something a little more spectacular than that. Vila: Try kicking it. Gan: Are you sure it's fully switched on?
Orac, who turns out to have a "grumpy old man" voice: Well of course I'm fully switched on! Haven't you pressed the Activator button? What else would you expect?
Jenna: Modest, isn't he? Orac: Modesty would be dishonesty. Vila: What's wrong with being dishonest? Orac: Is that a question? Vila: Yes!
Orac: The question is futile. Were I to say that I'm incapable of dishonesty, how would you know if I'm being dishonest or not? Blake: You're capable of evasion, anyway. Vila: Be a good junk heap, shut up.
